Update

We had another meeting with the hotel during July and things are moving along wonderfully. We've arranged to have a teen room, if we have enough teens registered to make it feasible and are planning a Friday night "Luau on the Lanai" reception. Our speaker list is growing and there should be something for everyone.

The hospitality suites will be open 24 hours a day all weekend long and will be full of wonderful home-cooked goodies; soups, cookies, breads, candies and an assortment of other delicious delights. If the menu sounds amazingly like what was supposed to be served at the Birmingham AG, there is a reason. Because of the situation that developed with the AG, Birmingham was not allowed to serve all the wonder foods they had prepared. But, their loss is our gain! They have generously donated a lot of the foods to the After AG Un-Gathering.

If you have any books you would like to donate to the Weekend Long Book Sale, please contact me at Trisha@M-Friends.org. I'll arrange to come by and pick them up, or you can bring them to one of the M-Friends dinners. The proceeds from the book sale will be donated to the Memphis Literacy Council in memory of Dial Bowen.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the AG, we still need people to help with hospitality, set-up and take-down, hugging judges and other assorted duties during the UG. There's no better way to meet people than to be involved in the UG, so please volunteer. Our next planning meeting is Monday, August 6 and we would love to have your input. Join us, please.

Long-time friend Dial Bowen died on July 19, 2007. The obituary in the Memphis Commercial Appeal lists all the various facts about his life, but could not possibly convey the essence of the wonderful man we all knew and loved.

Dial had numerous health problems and for the last several years had been in a lot of pain. Yet, this did not stop him from helping others. Even as his health was declining, Dial did volunteer work at a  homeless shelter, was active in a neighborhood renovation group and of course his contributions to Memphis Mensa are too numerous to list. His positive attitude and love of life was an inspiration to everyone who he came in contact with.

Many thanks to everyone who helped fix up Dial's  patio so he would have a peaceful retreat when he got out of the hospital. Although he didn't have long to enjoy it, he did get to see the results and was very pleased. Many thanks also to everyone who volunteered to help  care for Dial during his last few days. This was a heart-breaking task and I know the family truly appreciates everyone's willingness to help.

Several years ago, Dial spent many hours working on trying to set-up an RG for Memphis Mensa. The timing just was not right and it did not happen. He was very excited about the upcoming UG and was hoping to be able to help with the planning. The UG Committee has decided to dedicate the Saturday night dance to Dial and the proceeds from the book sale will be donated to the Memphis Literacy Council in Dial's memory.

Dial, we love you and miss you!
